Futoshiki

(aka Hutosiki or More-or-Less)

Futoshiki is a logic puzzle originating in Japan whose name means 'Inequality'. It was developed by Tamaki Seto and first published in 2001. Based on a Latin Square where each row and column must contain only one of each digit, it includes a number of inequality symbols (Greater Than and Less Than) between cells. These inequalities must be satisfied, in addition to the Latin Square requirement, for the puzzle to be correctly solved.

In the west the puzzle has also been published under the names 'More or Less' and 'Hutosiki'. The second is a different spelling of Futoshiki, using the alternate romanization scheme.

Solving these puzzles is a combination of Sudoku row and column techniques and specific techniques related to the inequalities given. We have put together some challenging Futoshiki puzzles in our books. We hope you enjoy them - just click below to see more detail and example puzzles.
