The most popular number puzzle today

Sudoku has become a hugely popular type of puzzle with a number of interesting variations now available. In it's most popular form it's an easy to learn logic-based number grid puzzle. The word Sudoku is contracted from the Japanese phrase Su-ji wa dokushin ni kagiru which means "the numbers must be single".

The predecessor of the Sudoku puzzle, the magic square (Latin Square) with numbers removed, was first published in newspapers across France in the 1800's. The first modern Sudoku was not created until 1979 when its believed Howard Garns, an American architect, first published the format.

World wide popularity began in Japan in 1984 after it was published by the Nikoli puzzle company. The original name was Nanpure which translates as Number Place, but that soon changed to Sudoku.
